According to Unicef there are an estimated 750,000 people living on the street in the United States and a further 3,000,000 in Europe Tackling the issue of how to address urban homelessness has been a constant thorn in the side of the design and construction industry. There should be a basic rule – if you cannot design a basic shelter, you cannot call yourself an architect. Earlier this year the website Designboom tried to address this issues by hosting the ‘shelter in a cart’ competition as their 2006 Social Awareness Award. The response was incredible – over 4246 designers from 95 countries participated.Prior to Architecture for Humanity I had spent my architectural education and graduate thesis focused on developing sustainable and transitional housing for homeless populations in New York City. More recently we released the book Design Like You Give A Damn: Architectural Responses to Humanitarian Crises, which has a chapter on responses to homelessness – mainly in the United States. Therefore I was asked to be apart of final jury for the competition and was presented with a shortlist of 115 entries. The brief set out was fairly controversial given the fact that the criteria was to develop a ‘cart’ system to support those who chose to stay on the streets, rather than the housing shelter approach. During the review the one thing that worried me was that many entries ignored two basic needs – protection of ones valuables and a self-sustaining economic engine.By the end of the jury process I felt there was a sole entry that tackled these issues, the poorly named and under budgeted ‘a street car named survivor’. This entry, designed by Ing-Tse Chen, looked at a variety of potential way to generate income while still having safe and lockable storage while someone slept. The concept is based on the traditional Chinese carts, where the designer is from. The tricycle can transform the unit from a taxi to a movable store.Other Self Built StructuresSince 1987 a team of renegade architects and builders, known as the Mad Housers, have been building small shelters for the homeless. More than 100 48 sq. ft. huts began to appear after the group negotiated with city officials to look the other way, unless a property owner complained or the residents were disruptive to the neighborhood. Shelters appeared in California, Illinois and Wisconsin throughout the 90’s but after many were dismantled the group disbanded. Fast forward a few years and a new group of Mad Housers reemerged in Georgia. This time they worked within homeless settlements and developed designs that blended in with the environment. Some homes have now been up for 6 years. On the other side of the globe Kyohei Sakaguchi has been documenting homes built by the homeless in Tokyo, Japan. During his research there was an open source nature in sharing ideas and concepts, many that included sustainable technologies (see main image above). Homes included solar energy, lighting, cooking equipment, television or even computers, all have been produced with little or no money. Currently you can see a ‘zero yen’ house at the Vancouver Art Gallery. More images and information can be found via treehugger and Inhabitat. For more images of homelessness in Japan check out Nurri Kim’s related photography Tokyo Blues. The competition and these initiatives are not the the answer to issues of homelessness but they force the design community to begin to ask serious questions. What is the role of the designer? Who is the designer? Should we support these communities? Is homelessness a solvable issue?[ relayed from WorldChanging.com, Cameron Sinclair, Oct 27, 2006]

Tee design from Threadless: “Roadside Picnic” by Mattias LundbladThe Earth is a living organism, which some call Gaia. Humanity is taking apart Gaia’s life support systems in an orgy of procreation and consumption. Only radical social change and profound spiritual transformation can save us now.Radical is not a dirty word. It means markedly new opinions and actions far beyond the norm, often in response to dilemmas that stymie conventional wisdom. Many times in Western history radical political ideas expanded human dignity and opportunity. In this era of resource gluttony, tyranny and militarism, and post population bomb explosion; the Earth and her humanity are crying out for radical social and ecological change. We have gone from one billion to over 6.5 billion people in just over 125 years. Dying oceans, an end to ancient forests, water scarcity, unknown toxins interacting, over-consumption amongst grotesque inequity, and climate processes disintegrating — all are the face of a dying Earth as humans eat, and shit on, their home. How can humanity lighten its load upon, and restore, the biosphere’s ecological systems; even as plagued by war, injustice, poverty, disease and ignorance? This is the question of all remaining time, and I welcome all comprehensive, sufficient policy prescriptions. However, I am highly skeptical regarding the ability of liberal democratic capitalism, Islamic fundamentalism, Chinese market communism; or any other existing religious, political or economic traditions’ ability to equitably and justly feed 9 billion people on a failing Planet.Sometimes radicalism and revolutionary thinking are the only way forward when liberal and conservative status quo responses have failed society and the Earth. Clearly this is now the case as over-population and inequitable over-consumption well beyond the carrying capacity of the Earth threaten the very biological basis of being. Radical political ecologism is the way forward.Life, biological being, and ecological systems’ very existences are threatened. Wanton death and suffering loom. Where to go to escape China’s tyranny and America’s imperialism, and their combined militaristic and ecocidal drain upon Gaia? Where to go into exile from a collapsing Earth? When and how will the liquidation of life end? Can we end it? How?These are not my governments. I and my brethren are Earth citizens. This is not my economy. We imperfectly seek to live in a manner that the entire world could enjoy forever. These are not my wars upon the Earth and the poor. Tyrannical and imperialistic governments do not speak for me. This is not my ecological science, demonstrating plodding incautious caution in the face of global ecological collapse. Nor is this my environmental movement, with allegiance to what is in vogue and stylish half-measures rather than a commitment to sufficient truths.I am repulsed by all their Gods and prophets of war and oppression. In all my life I have really only learned one unique thing: The Earth is Truth. Truth is God. Thus the Earth is God.What do I mean by this simplistic, transitive statement of my youth? In all my early soul-searching and truth-seeking, the only demonstrably objective truth I could find is my and your utter dependence upon the Earth. We need water, air, land and other elements of good habitat to live. Thus the Earth is Truth.God has been and is many things to many people, and I strongly suspect we are all pursuing alternative ways to the spirit(s) in the sky and Earth. Yet the idea that this spirit is best exemplified by what is truthful continues to resonate with me as I grow older. The truth found in a beautiful blooming spring flower, a laughing child and an intricate ecosystem is God.And as every pre-algebra student knows, this leads us to the tautology that the Earth is God. There are many ways to this place of transcendent truth beauty — philosophical, scientific and ecological intuitions are all equally valid paths to Gaia.So what shall we do with this knowledge? If the Earth is truly God, which could be called Gaia, then she and all of her lively components are worthy of awe filled worship; and of unflinching, devotional protection at all costs.Saving the Earth will require embracing Gaia spiritually, and pursuit of radical change on her behalf. We are called back to the land even as we engage the Earth destroying global growth machine. Certainly ending coal use, protecting ancient forests and flying less are worthy and necessary rituals of Gaia worship.

Think before you grab that plastic bag in 7-11 (for that can of drink you are about to pop open, drink and dump?). Think before you choose between a tetrapack (which is hard to recycle) or a recycle-able aluminium can/glass bottle. Think before you simply dump your rubbish (or try separating it for a week, you will be surprise how much garbage you personally generate).

A testament in the existence of true Hip Hop, not the bling shit the radio shuffling down the throats of school kids, is the band Arrested Development from Tennessee USA.2 Decades of Genuine Hip Hop Music from the Rural SouthArrested Development is just getting started…Historically, there’s BC and AD– Musically, it’s all about AD. Arrested Development wants to take you to another time and place.

Making and breaking RecordsIt’s been nearly 15 years since a new group called Arrested Development slammed the gangsta dominated world of hip hop with defiant lyrics of hope. Apparently the world was ready for the change as AD ripped 2 Grammy awards, one for best new artist and one for best rap single, which was a first. Money came in but not for precious stones and big cars. Instead, these pioneers of the conscious rap game took one big step for mankind by giving back and becoming the first African American artists to donate money to Nelson Mandela and the ANC. As backup for the voice of the people, AD was then hired to compose music for Spike Lee’s major motion picture, X.Their first album, 3 years, 5 months & 2 days In The Life of…, sold over 4 million units, with singles from that maiden voyage playing like a soundtrack in life for many of us. MTV awarded the effort with best rap single of 1992 and best musical video. Reflecting that song’s lyrics, half of the royalties from AD’s biggest single, Mr. Wendal were donated to the National Coalition for the Homeless. That’s all good, but it’s just a warm up to what’s coming. After a few well deserved years off, Arrested Development began touring again in the year 2,000. All that experience has built to a new musical peak, as this 19 piece group sets out to change the world of music, again. The new album.Life MusicA new revolution has been born from compelling stories told to a joyful beat and a style, a groove, and a consciousness that continues expanding from a ground zero explosion to include all children, their parents, their grandparents and everyone of all races, cultures and beliefs into one pulsing celebration of life, something the AD family (you’re included in that just by wanting to be) call Life Music. It’s as if sound had received a transfusion of new blood and came pounding forth with a heart of flesh.Seeing Arrested Development live is not only a trip, but a journey to other lands and places not found on any map—emotional destinations tattooed deeply on the human heart. As crowds sway, dance, laugh, cry and, in some cases, even get in touch with who they were created to be, the group transports true believers beyond themselves, creating a current connecting body, mind and soul. The light comes on and darkness flees by the back door.Eshe, the group’s main dancer, choreographer and vocalist, says, “We get on stage every night as warriors of rhythm and storytellers of dignity.” Speech, AD’s founder and lead vocalist puts it this way, “We have a passion to broaden the game and inspire the people to rise above today’s one-sided view of hip hop.”In the past, the closest comparison to AD was the legendary Sly and the Family Stone, when they were in their peak, spreading good feelings through their music around the world. Today, there is no comparison to a vibe that the eternally young can move to. The last album from 1992 (Chrysalis)Since the Last TimeAfter 20 years warming up, Arrested Development gives up their latest offering, ‘Since the Last Time’, a polished gem which is “a mixture of an easy going, but lively group of songs meant to stir up belief and thirst. Life Music takes people to a higher level through music.” Speaking about the new release, 76 year old elder and AD member, Baba Oje said, “We wanted to add old fashioned party songs to our catalog. It shows our fun side.””Stand”, a track from the new release, sums up the vibe:People don’t change cuz of words aloneYet a nation can be moved by one person who’s strongAnd truth can be buried for moments of timeBut like the last day buried things are bound to rise.Rise above a mass of violent noise and embrace Life Music.See AD live if you can. If not, get the new CD. We can’t promise it will add years to your life, but it will definitely add life to your years. See it. Hear it. Feel it. Believe it.Arrested Development’s newest CD, ‘Since The Last Time’ can be purchased on line or in record stores Oct. 30th 2007 on Vagabond Records & Tapes.ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT members are: SPEECH, ESHE, ONE LOVE, NICHA (lead vocals). RASADON (aka DON NORRIS) - drummer, vocalist / graphic artist. BABA OJE’ (74 yrs old) - elder / dancer / vocalist. JJ BOOGIE – Guitar, programming. ZA’ – Bass guitar and programming.http://www.arresteddevelopmentmusic.com/ —GOOODNESS says:Arrested Development recently played the headlining show for Traffic Jam 2007 in Singapore. Awesome live performances by Speech and the band, wicked DJ, nice mix repertoire of new and classic AD (goosebumps!) tunes, a landmark show for Singapore. I hope the local audience get what Hip Hop is really about.
